How to Create a Cozy Reading Nook

Nooks are some of the coziest spots that a house can have! These awkward little spaces and alcoves can at times defy decorating, such as underneath a set of stairs. While these little areas can be tricky to decorate, they have their advantages too. These add so much charm to your home, while also serving a functional purpose. Whether you’re looking into decorating this little space to use every day or just occasionally, then here are some tips for creating a stylish little reading nook.

Color Palette

One of the very first things you’ll need to do is determine what sort of color palette you want. This is going to depend on how much space you have for your nook, because you may want this to be cohesive with the rest of the room. Since this nook is going to be for reading, you’ll want to incorporate colors that will make you feel relaxed. Neutral shades such as soft grays and beige are perfect for feeling relaxed. Once you have an idea for your color palette, you can then begin decorating.

Comfy Seating

Your nook must have some seating. You’ll often find photos online such as Pinterest or social media of cute little nooks that feature a chaise or club chair. This is quite a traditional look for a reading nook, but realistically you can have whatever type of chair that you want. Just be sure that you pick a chair that is comfortable enough to sit in for a couple of hours.

Cushions

Any cozy nook should have some cushions. Adding in some textiles such as this is a great way to help your chair look a little less naked. Throw pillows are a great way to add a touch of your personality and a pop of color too. Don’t forget to include a throw blanket.

Side Table

A side table is a great addition to any nook, as these are excellent for placing your reading materials on. What would be best is picking a table that will complement the chair, but also the space as a whole.

Shelving

What’s a nook without some books? Floating shelves or even a bookshelf are great ways to accessorize your space while truly making this nook feel like your own personal library. You can even include decorative accents on the shelf. One fun tip for displaying books would be stacking them on top of one another and then placing a decoration on top. This is a great way to showcase your literature while also including more of your personality in the room.

Lighting

Natural lighting is always the way to go, however, your reading nook doesn’t need to be close to a window. Artificial lighting can work just well for the space too. Adding something like a standing lamp can really help with giving off a warm glow to the nook. A small lamp on the side table can be a great way to bring more attention to the seating area.

There are plenty of ways to style a nook into a cozy spot for reading and relaxing.
